Mr Sykes, 22, of Airedale, said: “It would be awesome to get a spot on the PDC – that’s the dream.

“I started playing darts five years ago when I started playing with my dad and turning professional is all I’ve ever wanted since.”

The duo, of United Sports Promotions, are competing in the event this week.

They will know if they’ve won a PDC spot when the event finishes on Saturday.

Mr Weaver, 35, who has been playing the sport for 17 years, said: “Getting on the PDC is the be all and end all in darts.

“It’s where the money is and you play against all the stars of the sport you see on TV.

“I’m semi-professional at the minute but have to work full-time as well but the PDC is the dream.”

The four-day event at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, in Wigan, is open to any player over the age of 16 and offers 16 automatic two-year tour cards.
