The deal, which the foundation agreed with site owners Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust last week, could see it transformed into a multi-use facility for both schoolchildren and the public.

The site on Northgate, has also been made secure after it became a target for vandals since the trust moved services out of the building in 2012.

John McLeod, spokesman for the governors of the school foundation, said: “This agreement regarding the development is a very exciting milestone in the 420 plus year history of our foundation.

“We very much hope that new facilities built on the site over the coming years will be enjoyed by future generations of pupils and the Wakefield community.”

The Express understands the building could be tranfformed into a sports facility which could be used by pupils at the foundation’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School and Wakefield Girls’ High School and the public, subject to appropriate planning permission being granted.

A spokesman for Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust said a deal with the school foundation was “in place” and that it was the “preferred bidder.”

He said the deal was expected to go through by around February next year.

Iain Brodie, general facilities manager at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The trust is delighted to have reached an agreement with the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation to have them as the preferred bidder for the Clayton Hospital.

“We are confident that should their bid progress successfully, the site will become an asset for the entire community.”
