The sewer located under Shay Lane is prone to bursts.

Earlier this year the company started replacing 1.3km of sewer in Walton and Crofton to reduce the risk of these bursts. Most of the replacement sewer has been laid in private land and fields to minimise the impact on the community.

However the final section of the sewer does need to be laid in Shay Lane. On Wednesday July 20, a team from Barhale (working on behalf of Yorkshire Water), will start work in Shay Lane under the railway bridge.

The bridge and the embankment limit the construction methods available. In order to protect the integrity of these assets and the safety of the on-site team and road-users this section of Shay Lane will be closed for approximately six weeks from Jul 20.

A vehicle diversion route has been agreed with Wakefield Council; via Greenside, Oakenshaw Lane, Walton Lane, Barnsley Road, Agbrigg Road, Doncaster Road, Lodge Lane and Harrison Road.

Metro will be providing a shuttle bus service for both Walton and Crofton residents. For information about the impact on buses, please visit www.wymetro.com or call 0113 245 7676.

Andrew McKinley, Yorkshire Water Project Manager said, “Road closures are our last resort but in order to work safely we have no option here. We’re working in the summer holidays to try and minimise disruption but appreciate our work will still have an impact. We are sorry for the inconvenience the closure will cause.”

Yorkshire Water or Barhale employees will not need access to residents’ properties and residents are being asked to be on their guard against bogus callers whilst Barhale are working in the area.

Employees of both companies carry identity cards which can be checked by telephoning 0800 1 38 78 78 and they won’t mind waiting while their details are verified.
