The 2012 Dragon Boat Race takes place next weekend at Pugney’s Country Park, with more than 360 rowers taking part.

Last year’s event raised £23,000 for local charities, including Wakefield Hospice, and organiser Stuart Wardell is hoping a similar amount can be raised this year.

He said: “I’d be happy if we raised the same amount again this time around. We’ve got 18 teams confirmed at the moment, which is slightly down on what we had last year, but we usually get a few last minute entrants.

“I dare not look at the forecast at the moment but I’m hoping it’ll be nice enough for people to have a barbecue.

“We had a good turnout last year and I’m expecting the bank to be full again with spectators.”

The charities set to benefit from this year’s fundraising are the Alzheimer’s Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening conditions.

Last year’s winners from the Bishopgarth police training centre are entering again this year, but there are still spaces available. Any teams who wish to take part can contact Mr Wardell on 01924 840962.
