Drivers urged to avoid Chain Bar roundabout while work takes place

Drivers are being encouraged to bypass a busy roundabout linking the M606 to the M62 near Bradford while work to upgrade the junction takes place.

Highways England is adding an extra lane to the roundabout at Chain Bar as part of a £11.3m project to tackle congestion at the junction.

The 2+ lane, originally dedicated to car sharers, can be used by all motorists, including those travelling alone, to bypass the roundabout while the work continues.

It means traffic on the M606 Southbound can reach the Eastbound carriageway of the M62 at Junction 26, avoiding the roundabout and traffic lights, without any penalties.

One lane will be closed around sections of the roundabout between 9.30am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday to enable the work to progress more quickly.

Highways England projet manager Esref Ulas said: “We carried out a trial back in September when we decided to close one lane around Chain Bar roundabout during the day. This was successful at certain locations and we have decided that we will close those sections when traffic levels are lower.

“We are also opening up the 2+ lane to all drivers during the works to reduce the number of people who need to use the roundabout.

“We will continue to monitor the situation during the lane closures and the suspension of the 2+ lane and would like to thank drivers for their patience.”

The Chain Bar project is due to be completed by next Autumn.
