Easter Services as churches celebrate Holy Week

Churches across the city are marking the Holy Week with a series of special events and services.

Wakefield Cathedral are holding special Easter services which will also mark the end of the Wakefield Diocese.

Today (Friday) there will be a service at 8.15am, a Walk of Witness at 9.45am, Words from the Cross at 12.30noon, Liturgy of Passion at 1.30pm and Missa (Mass Liturgy) at 5pm.

At 4.30pm on Sunday there will be a Eucharist at Chantry Chapel.

St Austin’s Catholic Church on Wentworth Terrace began celebrating the Easter Triduum, three holy days, last night with a special supper.

Tim Whitwell, who is currently staying in St Austin’s Presbytery, said: “On Good Friday (today) at 3pm we commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.”

On Saturday at 8.30pm the congregation will gather to celebrate the Easter Vigil and the first Mass of the Resurrection.

St Helen’s and St Paul’s Church of Sandal Magna will be holding a Service of Devotion tonight at Sandal Castle. The congregation will walk down Barnsley Road with three crosses at 5pm and the outdoor service will begin at 5.30pm.

St George’s Church Lupset are holding a Good Friday service this afternoon from 2pm until 3pm. Then on Sunday there is a service at 10.45am on Broadway.

New Life Christian Centre on George Street are having a Baptismal family service on Easter Sunday at 10.30am.
