Ossett and South Kirkby solar farms: public to be consulted later this year

A consultation on two huge solar farms in the Wakefield district will go ahead later this year, it's been confirmed.

Plans to build the farms, on unspecified sites in Ossett and South Kirkby, were revealed by the local council last year.

Engagement with the public about the scheme was set to take place in the first half of this year, before it was delayed by COVID-19.

But local residents will be able to offer their views about the farms before Christmas.

Work at both sites, which could cost in the region of £40m, will then be subject to planning permission.

Wakefield Council's deputy leader, Coun Jack Hemingway, said on Tuesday he was due to hold meetings with councillors from Ossett and South Kirkby around July time.

A public consultation will begin after that, he said.

The council has said the solar farms will be crucial to helping it achieve its 2030 carbon neutral target.
