Wakefield District Housing has launched a campaign that encourages people to celebrate acts of kindness in our communities, just in time for Christmas.

Members of the public are asked to nominate WDH tenants who have shown kindness to others during this particularly difficult year for a chance to win a special festive prize. Since launching on Monday, December 1, WDH have already received over 170 nominations.

The competition follows WDH’s successful Love Where You Live Awards, held earlier this year to recognise and reward good neighbours and community groups who make a positive difference in their communities.

The awards generated a record breaking 18,605 votes with eight individuals and groups being crowned the winners by public vote.

The success of the event inspired the organisation to give people another chance to share examples of individuals who had been kind to their friends, families and strangers.

Andy Wallhead, WDH Chief Executive said: “I’m delighted that we are giving people the chance to celebrate even more fantastic people.

"There is no doubt that this will have been one of the most challenging years for most of us, and in dark times we most certainly need as much light as possible, especially at Christmas.

"Therefore, we are asking people to nominate any of our tenants who they feel have done a great act of kindness. It could be something such as supporting those self-isolating during the pandemic by delivering groceries, picking up the phone for a chat to check in and cheer someone up or organising a fun and safe activity for children during lockdown.

“People do small selfless acts every day, which unfortunately go unnoticed and for that reason, we will be choosing 12 nominees to win an early Christmas gift to show our gratitude for their actions.”

To continue with the theme of communities coming together, WDH is championing local businesses who have faced a challenging year by buying local and sourcing a range of exciting prizes for the winners from right here within the district.

To nominate, people can visit the WDH website and share their kindness stories now until 12 December.
