Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park will have its status changed to a "nature reserve", if senior councillors get their way.

The park, which is cared for by a local volunteer group, would potentially receive more funding if the change goes ahead.

Wakefield Council says it will seek legal approval for the move, provided it's signed off by Cabinet members next week.

Councillor Maureen Cummings, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “It has been fantastic to see how the land at the former Lofthouse Colliery has been transformed over the years to become so popular with residents as a great place to visit and to enjoy the local wildlife.

“We are keen to look at how we can protect and enhance this outdoor space so that it can be enjoyed by people now and by future generations.”
