Hundreds of supporters came to Pugneys on Denby Dale Road to float their candles in honour of loved ones and the hospice’s work on June 11.

Events fundraiser Clare Kemsley said: “Each year Wakefield Hospice supports around 2,000 people and their families through a very difficult time in their lives. Our nurses are frequently told that the hospice has been a guiding light through an extremely dark and difficult time. It was from this that we developed our Lights on the Lake event. We wanted to continue the light into darkness at sunset.”

As the sun set last Saturday evening, candles illuminated the main lake at Pugneys. The candles represented the guiding light of the hospice. At 10.30pm the final raft was launched on to the lake and a firework display took place.

The hospice on Aberforth Road was delighted with the turnout and generosity shown by the people who attended.

People’s fundraising and sponsorship of candles on the night has raised thousands of pounds for the hospice patients.

The money will be used by the hospice to help people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Fundraising and Lottery Co-ordinator Fiona Day said: “The hospice would like to thank everyone who donated and attended the event. Also to the team of volunteers who enabled the evening to take place and Minster Law who sponsored Lights on the Lake.”
