Featherstone firefighters release ring from woman’s finger during strike

Firefighters had to cut a ring from a woman’s finger during this afternoon’s strike action.

The woman went to Featherstone fire station after the ring became stuck due to swelling.

Crews used a specialist ring-cutter at the Andrew Street station to release the piece of jewellery.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) walked out on strike between noon and 2pm today as a bitter dispute with the government over pensions continues.

They will strike again tonight between 10.59pm and 11.59pm.

Steve Beckley, deputy chief fire officer for West Yorkshire, said: “We are nearing the end of this current period of Fire Brigades Union strike action and would like to thank the public for their efforts in taking extra care whilst limited resources were available.

“We hope the FBU and the fire minister can resolve this dispute as quickly as possible so we can get back to our daily business of keeping West Yorkshire safe.”
