COPPER thieves started a blaze in a former hospital building this morning (Wednesday).

Firefighters said they believed the intruders had caused the fire in the derelict building, on the site of the former Manygates Hospital, close to Woodlands Village.

Crews from Wakefield and Normanton were called to the incident on Manygates Lane just after 11am.

A spokesman for the fire service said copper had been stripped from the building before the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
