The £600,000 scheme, which will see the current traffic light system removed, started last month following the completion of the Northern Link Road.

As part of the work, drivers will not be able to turn right from Wakefield Road onto Mill Hill for around 20 weeks.

A signed diversion will be in place via Wakefield Road, Southgate, Valley Road roundabout, Southgate and Mill Hill.

The scheme will see the traffic lights replaced with one small and one larger roundabout.

It is expected to take until July to complete.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “This scheme will ease the problem of traffic congestion in Pontefract – I’m confident of that.”
