Full list of pothole damaged streets fixed in Wakefield district

Workers at Wakefield Council are trying to keep up with the district’s pothole problem as recent wintry spells have devastated roads and caused havoc for motorists.

In less than a week the council repaired damaged to more than 80 of the most blemished routes.

Wakefield will receive around half a million in funding to tackle the issue but a senior councillor has warned this is a drop in the ocean, representing just one per cent of the cash needed.

The Express has launched a campaign to highlight the problem and is working alongside the council to lobby central government. Coun Matthew Morley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “Our highways teams are working extremely hard to help keep our roads up to scratch. Another spell of unseasonal winter weather over the Easter weekend will have had an impact on the condition of our roads.

“We have increased the number of teams who are out repairing the roads. Potholes will always be an issue for all councils, but we are doing the very best we can with the resources we have available.

“Recently, within just six days, we have visited 84 streets across Wakefield to repair the worst of the potholes, as requested by residents. So please be assured that we are working tirelessly to get the job done.

“We are continuing to inspect and monitor all roads in the district so we can prioritise our resources to carry out the repairs that are needed the most.”

The Department for Transport recently reported that a fifth of local roads in England and Wales were in a poor condition.
