Gear we go again as Pontefract Grand Prix returns

Youngsters will be able to take to the Pontefract Grand Prix track just hours before top cyclists from across the country battle it out in the event’s second race this weekend.

The event, organised by Polypipe Cycling Team, Wakefield Council and British Cycling is on Sunday, June 7.

For the first time, the Pontefract town centre circuit will be opened up to budding cyclists from 10am until 11am.

Ashley Brown, event organiser, said: “All of the preparations have gone really well and everything is in place now.

“We want as many families to come down and enjoy the event. We just hope we avoid the torrential rain and flooding that we had last year.”

Olympic gold medallist Steven Burke took part in last year’s race, which was watched by about 1,000 spectators.

Mr Brown said: “I’m sure people will find something special at the event. Cycling in this country is going from strength to strength with the success of the Tour De Yorkshire and the thousands of spectators that lined the roads on that spectacular weekend

“We hope to take advantage of that legacy with the Pontefract Grand Prix.”

Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, also encouraged people to go to the event.

He said: “The Pontefract Grand Prix is all set to be wonderful day.

“After the success of the Tour de Yorkshire it’s great that we have this event as there is such great enthusiasm for cycling in our district.

“Working in partnership has allowed us to broaden the appeal of the event and attract a superb range of competitors and I’d encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the day.

“There is even an opportunity for anyone to ride the route from 10.00-11.00 before the racing begins.”
