'˜Great honour': Readers have their say on naming new relief road after Trinity legend Neil Fox

Wakefield Council announced last week that it was seeking ideas on what to call the £33m road, which officially opened at the end of April.

Leader Coun Peter Box proposed naming it in honour of Trinity legend Neil Fox.

The idea was greeted with enthusiasm by many.

Martin Empsall said: “Think it’s a great idea and a fitting tribute to the top points scorer ever in Rugby League.”

Ian Hague wrote: “Brilliant idea about time he got some recognition.”

Wendy Larkin said: “Definitely deserved, recognition for his achievements.”

Paul Walton agreed, writing: “Neil Fox Way, without question. Not only the all time world record points scorer of any rugby league player, but a wonderful ambassador for Wakefield and a true gentleman.”

Phil Townsend wrote: “I think it’s a great honour. What would top that would be to honour his achievements by ensuring that professional sport and RL stays in Wakefield and the council back the building of the Community Stadium at Newmarket that would ensure that it does.”

Brian Hirst said: “Fantastic idea Wakefield’s finest ever sportsman deserves every honour going.”

And Steve Beddard added: “Why not name all the roads after Wakefield heroes. Neil fox Way, Topliss Drive, Derek Turner Avenue, Coetzer Street, Haigh Walk etc.”

Others were less certain and some put forward suggestions for other names.

Robert Adamson said: “Never heard of this bloke, I’d rather it be called Roady McRoad Face!”

Paul Wilby wrote: “Ridiculous. No-ones ever heard of him.”

And Tara Cook said: “People will think it’s the bloke that used to do Pop Idol.”

Mr Fox received an MBE in 1982 and was admitted into the Rugby Hall of Fame in 1988, the highest accolade the sport can bestow on a player.

In 2013, the council awarded him Freedom of the City, as an ambassador of Wakefield district, to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to sport.
