The Hepworth celebrates its fifth birthday
In the five years since The Hepworth was officially opened, it has welcomed more than 2.4 million visitors through its doors.
And this weekend, it hopes to welcome dozens more as it hosts five parties to mark its fifth anniversary.
The celebrations kick off at 10.30am tomorrow with a baby rave, followed by an afternoon of dance and music, including performances from the Northern Ballet, and Wakefield Community Gospel Choir.
Bands who will feature in this year’s Long Division music festival line up will then present an evening of live music, alongside a street food market, pop-up bar and film screenings.
On Sunday, families are invited to join in a celebratory birthday picnic in the gallery gardens.
Activities include face painting, games, stories and crafts.
The celebrations will conclude on Sunday afternoon with an afternoon tea party and swing dance.
The £35m gallery was officially opened on May 21, 2011.
David Liddiment, The Hepworth Wakefield chairman said: “I’m immensely proud of what the team has achieved.
“I think that the success of the gallery is evident in the numerous repeat visitors and the excellent satisfaction ratings we receive from our audience.
“The gallery provides the inspiring experience of world class art in the best designed purpose built gallery in the UK.
“I’m thrilled that the ambition and reputation of the gallery continues to grow.”
As part of its fifth anniversary year, The Hepworth announced plans to create a public riverside garden.
Landscape designers and architects came up with four designs for the garden and the winning one will be revealed in the coming months.
