A NEW one-stop shop bringing council services under one roof opens in the city centre at the end of the month.

Wakefield One, on Burton Street, contains a modern library with 60,000 books and 70 computers, and a new museum.

A large customer service area on the ground floor will give people support with issues ranging from planning, to school admissions, to benefits.

And an on-site cafe will also open soon.

The new building, which opens on Monday, October 29, also has a business lounge offering start-up advice, and has been funded by the vacating and selling of other council buildings, including Newton Bar’s planning offices, Drury Lane and Balne Lane libraries and Chantry House, on Kirkgate.

And by amalgamating services into one place the council will save about £1m a year.

Leader of the council Coun Peter Box said: “I’m delighted that residents will be able to visit all these fantastic facilities in one place.”

Most council office staff have already moved into the four-storey building.

People will still be able to contact the council by phone or online. For details on Wakefield One, visit
