The 19-year-old said: “My step dad, Stuart, has three children of his own - one of whom is severely autistic and requires 24-hour care.

“His ex daughter-in-law sadly passed away in 2011, leaving behind a little girl of eight. But Stuart immediately took his granddaughter under his wing, giving her everything she needed.

“Not only has he had to cope with my mum and his mother battling cancer, he is also suffering from stage four kidney failure himself. Stuart deserves this award for being more than a dad, he is an angel. He is my hero.”

His competition prize was a hamper of goodies worth £250. His stepdaughter also got a £25 gift card.

Mr Hall said: “There’s no doubt that the last few years have been difficult, but I wouldn’t change my family for the world.

“I am thrilled that Ellie nominated me for this competition and I was overwhelmed to hear her kind words and reasons why she put me forward.

“Winning was a real surprise and an extra special gift for Father’s Day, making it one I will never forget. I can’t thank Ellie enough!”

Sara Hassan, marketing manager at The Ridings, said: “Picking an overall winner was a really difficult task as we had so many fantastic entries. It was a pleasure to read all the nominations and find out just why each dad was being nominated.

She added: “Ellie’s story immediately grabbed us. We felt that Stuart, having been through so much, was more than a worthy winner.

Stuart might have been crowned the winner, but we would like to congratulate all those who were nominated. There are some truly fantastic dads in the Wakefield district.”
