JOBS are at risk after high street music retailer HMV called in the administrators.
HMV’s store in Wakefield’s Cathedral precinct is among 250 UK-wide which could close.
The 91-year-old company, which employs 4,500 people, has appointed administrators from accountancy firm Deloitte after being hammered by an rise in online shopping.
HMV gift vouchers, including those bought weeks ago as Christmas presents, have been declared worthless by the company.
The website www.HMV.com has been suspended and online purchases stopped until further notice.
Nick Edwards, Joint Administrator and restructuring services partner at Deloitte, said: “Following our appointment, we are working closely with management and staff to stabilise the business in order to continue trading whilst actively seeking a purchaser for the business and assets.
“We appreciate the cooperation and support from the staff, customers, suppliers and landlords at what is clearly a difficult time.”
Deloitte said further advice for holders of HMV gift vouchers would be issued today.
