Homecare service for the elderly told to improve

Sherwood Court, in Kettlethorpe, is a block of 45 independent flats for people aged over 60 as well as some with specific conditions.

The complex, which has shared facilities including a dining room and a garden, caters for both healthy residents and people living with dementia and learning disabilities.

A service to deliver individual care to its residents was set up in April last year, but its first inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has resulted in it being given a ‘requires improvement’ grade.

However, the service did get a ‘good’ rating on two of the five criteria used by the regulator to measure healthcare providers.

Wakefield Council said that some of the suggested improvements have been made since inspectors visited.

Rob Hurren, service director for integrated care said: “Making sure that people receive good quality care, whether this is delivered directly by the council or by independent providers, is an important priority for us.

“The CQC have acknowledged that the service is ‘good’ for being caring and effective and now we need to improve the overall rating for the service.

“We have already made some improvements and are submitting an action plan to CQC to ensure that the service meets all required standards from now on.”
