Huge field blaze looked like ‘armageddon’

A huge blaze swept through a field in Hemsworth last night (Thursday).

Fire crews from South Kirby, Wakefield, Featherstone and Normanton, plus specialist officers, were called to a wheat field, off Robin Lane, at around 6pm.

Watch commander Darren Hague, of South Kirby Fire Station, said: “It stretched for about half a mile, when we first got there we couldn’t see the end of the fire.

“It looked like armageddon, it could be seen for miles.”

Firefighters used hose reels and 16 beaters to extinguish the fire, which took around two hours to put out.

It is believed the fire was started deliberately.
