Hundreds join Archbishop for Horbury Whit Walk

Hundreds of people joined the Archbishop of York for Horbury’s Whitsuntide walk yesterday.

Local school pupils, church members and officials, the new Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Brian Holmes, and local residents were among those who walked with Archbishop John Sentamu from St John’s Church at Horbury Bridge, to St Peter’s Church in Horbury, where a special service was held.

Walkers were accompanied by the Horbury Victoria Brass Band.

Whitsuntide celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus. The tradition of the Horbury Whitsuntide walk started in 1840 when Rev John Sharp led 500 children in a procession to celebrate the Pentecostal feast.

Marchers sang Onward Christian Soldiers’ as they paraded through the town.

The famous hymn was written by Rev Sabine Baring-Gould in 1865 for the children of Horbury Bridge.

This year’s event also formed part of celebrations to mark the 125th anniversary of the Wakefield Diocese.
