Crews covering for striking firefighters have been called out to two incidents in Ossett.

An elderly man was checked by paramedics for smoke inhalation after a small fire caused by a pipe on a kitchen table broke out in his home

And the reduced crews were also called out to a small skip fire.

The strike, which is the 15th time the Fire Brigades Union has called action over a dispute over pensions, will be followed by a series of 15 short strike periods between Monday, July 14, and Monday, July 21.

Dave Walton, assistant chief fire officer, said: “We are very disappointed that we are in this position once again and are forced to divert yet more time and resources towards providing contingency arrangements.

“Contingency provisions will not provide the normal level of fire cover across West Yorkshire so I ask the public once again to take extra care and not to place any unnecessary, non-emergency demand on our reduced resources.”
