A MAN was killed after he stepped off a kerb and into the path of a double decker bus, an inquest heard.
Paul Coombes, 58, of Albion Street, was knocked down outside Crown House, on Kirkgate, at around 5.45pm last Wednesday, April 19.
Coroner David Hinchliff opened an inquest into his death yesterday in Leeds.
Witnesses told police that Mr Coombes stepped onto a crossing and was struck by the 189 Arriva bus.
Mr Coombes was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield where he was pronounced dead just after 6.30pm that evening.
Mr Hinchliff said: “Witnesses said he has stepped onto the pelican crossing at that location and into the path of a double decker bus.”
After the accident, Kirkgate and Marsh Way were closed for more than two hours as police carried out investigations.
Mr Hinchliff adjourned Mr Coombes’ inquest pending the outcome of further reports.
The coroner also issued a burial order to allow.
A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said an investigation had been carried out but no further action would be taken.
