Investigation launched into M62 death

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed it will investigate West Yorkshire Police’s handling of calls about a man who was seen walking on the M62 motorway before he was struck by a car and killed.

Ben Lloyd, 24, died instantly after being hit by a car as he walked along the motorway near Castleford just after 3.40am on Saturday, December 21, 2013.

Details of the incident and the calls were referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) by West Yorkshire Police on December 23.

And today the IPCC confirmed it will be carrying out an investigation.

It will look at what action was taken by the police and whether national guidelines, and the force’s own policies, were correctly followed.

Cindy Butts, IPCC Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: “My condolences go out to Mr Lloyd’s family during what must be an extremely difficult time for them.

“I would like to stress that our investigation will be thorough and robust and will determine if there were any failings by West Yorkshire Police.”
