It’s here - Wakefield’s Rhubarb festival is underway

Politicians, celebrity chefs and children’s TV characters have all been talking rhubarb this week.

Today Wakefield’s annual food and drink festival starts with chefs preparing culinary treats in the cookery theatre on the city’s precinct.

This year’s famous faces will include Rachel Green, of ITV Yorkshire’s Flying Cook and World on a Plate programmes. She will be cooking on Friday from 12.15pm to 12.45pm, 2.15pm to 2.45pm and 3.45pm to 4.15pm.

Former Ready Steady Cook chef, Brian Turner, will be in the theatre on Saturday from 11.30am to noon, 2.15pm to 2.45pm and 4pm to 5pm.

Great British Bake Off finalist Luis Troyano will be preparing culinary treats from 11.30am to noon and 3.30pm to 4pm on Sunday.

And children’s TV character Mr Bloom will be encouraging youngsters to explore nature at The Ridings from noon tomorrow. There will also be a series of workshops, street food, stalls, walks, tours and a Yorkshire-themed market.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture and sport said: “Make sure you don’t miss out on activities taking place from exclusive cookery demonstrations to some great street entertainment – and of course the chance to buy unique rhubarb flavoured foods from over 40 different stalls including, sausages, pizzas and pies.”

Dance group, The Rhubarb Tarts will provide street entertainment and festival mascot Dame Ruby Rhubarb will also return.

It will run from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
