A street party will be held at Lightwaves this weekend to celebrate the completion of its summer refurbishment.

Games and sporting activities will take place throughout Saturday’s party organised by Next Generation and Lightwaves Community Trust.

There will also be bouncy castles, a barbecue, music and a summer fair from 11am until 4pm at the leisure centre in Lower York Street.

General manager, Mohammed Ayub, said: “The idea is to bring people from all backgrounds together to have a good time and to find out more about what’s happening at Lightwaves.”

During the summer, the centre has undergone a £200,000 refurbishment.

With funding from Waste Recycling Environment Limited (WREN), the centre moved to LED lighting, which will oficially be switched on at 1pm by British champion black-belt kickboxer, Ellen Wakefield.

The centre’s changing rooms have also been refurbished and it has increased the number of facilities for people with disabilities, with the help of funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities programme.

From September, Wakefield College’s sport students will use the leisure centre facilities as part of their course.

Lightwaves is working in partnership with the college to develop plans for more facilities, such as a low-cost community gym to be used by students and the community.

Assisstant general manager, Ilonka van Rijn, said: “The street party will celebrate all the centre’s improvements and thank WREN, Sport England, Wakefield College, the local community and Lightwaves users for their generous support.”
