Kittens dumped with the rubbish

Council workers found the cats in a lay-by on Storrs Hill Road, Horbury, on Saturday morning.

And the animals were taken to the RSPCA.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Oprysk said the kittens were only a few days old.

She said: “What happened here beggars belief.

“This cat and her kittens were literally put out like rubbish. The kittens were so tiny their eyes weren’t even open.

“It was lucky they were spotted when they were otherwise who knows what might have happened to them.”

The mother cat is described as a young adult tabby and has been named ‘Mavis’ by staff.

Ms Oprysk added: “The mother cat was very scared and timid, most likely as a result of what she’s been through, but in good body condition. She wasn’t micro-chipped but it looks as though she has been wearing a collar prior to being dumped.”

Causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the needs of an animal are offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

If found guilty the maximum sentence is six months in prison and a fine of up to £20,000.
