Knitters wrap up town’s hospice with love

Staff, visitors and patients at the hospice appealed to the public to help them create a 300m knitted scarf.

But after donations flooded in from up and down the country, the hospice ended up with a 936.5m long scarf - big enough to wrap around the Halfpenny hospice building three times over.

Jo Lister, the hospice’s activity co-ordinator, said: “We put out an appeal for people to knit, crochet and stitch together a section of scarf that could all be stitched together to make one long scarf.

“We couldn’t believe the response. People just wanted to be involved and we had lots of support from schools and people in the area.

“It was great receiving so many donations from far and wide. It meant myself and other staff and patients could focus on pulling this amazing project together.”

Patients at the hospice also helped to make sections of the scarf which is set to be turned into blankets and donated to foodbanks across the area.

Ms Lister said: “The patients liked the idea of helping other people and focusing on an end goal.”

The scarf was revealed at a special event on Friday in front of around 50 people, including hospice staff, patients and volunteers.
