A single bunch of flowers has been laid on the steps leading to the flat, which is under police guard at both the front and rear, as white-suited forensics teams went in and out of the murder scene this evening.

And on Linton Road, which runs parallel to Barden Road, another flat was cordoned off as officers stood guard at the front and back of flat.

Lee Haigh, 39, has lived on Eastmoor for all his life.

The dad of five said: “It is very strange to wake up and have this on your doorstep and it is a bit shocking when you have kids.”

Others said they did not know the victims but did not think they had grown up on the estate.

Detectives were making house-to-house enquiries as people living nearby were still trying to come to terms with what happened this morning.

West Yorkshire Police were contacted by officers from Kent at 4.47am after a 19-year-old woman in Dover made them aware she had fears for the safety of two women in Wakefield.

And after a search of the flat on Barden Road three people, a 19-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman, have been arrested on suspicion of murder by Kent Police.

All three suspects remain in police custody.
