Leeds murder investigation: Police identify body in bin

Police named a man whose body was found in a wheeled bin that had been set alight as they continued to question three men on suspicion of his murder.

Firefighters discovered the body of Headingley man Michael Ayres, 60, after being called to Hyde Park Terrace, near St Augustine’s Wrangthorn church hall, on Saturday evening. Two men, aged 37 and 50, were arrested on Saturday and a third, aged 61, was arrested on Sunday. All remained in custody last night.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team, said Mr Ayres’s family had been left “devastated” by the news.

He added: “We are still keen to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the vicinity of in the period leading up to when Mr Ayres’ body was found. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw three men pulling a wheelie bin along Hyde Park Terrace at about tea-time on Saturday.”
