Lights out to commemorate First World War

People are being asked to turn off all their house lights between 10pm and 11pm and leave on a single light or candle in a shared moment of remembrance.

Hundreds of churches and buildings around the country will take part in tonight’s Lights Out event.

Britain declared war against Germany at 11pm on August 4, 1914. The Great War would last for four years, finally ending with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: “We think the Lights Out campaign is a marvellous initiative and I would encourage all residents to show their support by leaving just one candle burning or one light on during that hour.

“I’ll be taking it as a prompt to reflect on the great sacrifices made so that future generations have their liberty, and on the immense courage of the men and women who gave their lives to make that possible.

“Our council buildings are closed at that time, but we are certainly encouraging staff to show their support by joining in.”
