Loving memorial for Elsie Frost 50 years on from her murder

The doves, marking each year of her life, will be set free at St George’s Church, Lupset between 3.55pm and 4.15pm, thought to be the time Elsie died.

Elsie’s brother Colin Frost and sister Anne Cleave are inviting anybody who knew Elsie or was affected by events surrounding her death to a memorial service at the church from 3pm.

Deputy Wakefield Council leader Denise Jeffrey and former Wakefield MP David Hinchcliffe will be among those attending.

Elsie Frost, died October 1965, aged 14.

A memorial tree will also be planted today, adorned with a plaque, at Wakefield Crematorium.

The dedication will be made by Mayor of Wakefield Coun June Cliffe.

Elsie was brutally murdered close to the Calder and Hebble Canal on October 9, 1965, aged just 14.

It is thought she had been walking home from an afternoon sailing with her friends at what is now known as Horbury Lagoon, when her killer struck.

Her lifeless body was found at the ABC steps, named because there are 26 of them, by a dog walker at around 4.15pm.

Despite the biggest manhunt the city had ever seen, her killer has never been caught.
