A MAN and a woman were killed in a road smash on the M62 this morning. (Wednesday)
The 46-year-old man and the 43-year-old woman were travelling in an Audi A5 when they collided with a Mercedes lorry on the westbound slip road to junction 26 at Chain Bar.
The pair, believed to be from the Bishop Auckland area, died following the incident at 5.50am.
A 43-year-old man who was driving the lorry was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Motorists are still facing delays of up to 90 minutes after the westbound carriageway between junction 26 and junction 25, at Brighouse, was closed.
Diversions are in place, and the Highways Agency said it expected the road to be reopened at 2pm.
Police are expected to be at the scene for the most of the day.
Sgt Garry Alderson, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Clearly this was a very serious incident which has sadly resulted in the deaths of the man and woman travelling in the Audi.
“We are conducting a full collision investigation at the scene and obviously this will take time given the seriousness of the incident.
“I would advise drivers to avoid the area if at all possible while recovery work is underway.”
Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact the team on 01924 293047.
