DC Mark Hargreaves, of Wakefield district CID, said: “The incident occurred on Kirkby Close in the early hours of Tuesday, February 3 around 01.20am when the victim returned home from work and was confronted by the two suspects who demanded money and personal belongings.

“When the victim refused he was punched a number of times and fell to the floor where he was then kicked in the head before a neighbour alerted police and the two suspects ran off. They are believed to have left the scene in the direction of Beacon Drive.

“Nothing was stolen in the incident and while the victim sustained cuts to his lip and bruising to his face his injuries could have been far more serious given the vicious nature of the attempted robbery and it’s important we identify these people and bring them before a court.”

Detectives have released e-fit images of two men they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.
