Man rescued from burning building after blaze breaks out at village takeaway

Witnesses described huge plumes of black smoke pouring out of the King Do on High Street, Kippax.

It was thought the fire broke out at around 1pm.

Police were first on the scene and while several people escaped the blaze, witnesses said a man was trapped in an upstairs room at the front of the building and was banging on the window to be rescued.

Pat Samy, who runs Pat's Sweets next door, said: "I could see him at the window and the policeman was asking if they had a ladder.

"The man managed to break the window from the inside, and put a duvet across the window so he could climb out. The police man climbed up the ladder and managed to drag the guy through.

"The fire engines arrived after the police, there were four engines at one point. I think the guy from upstairs was taken away in an ambulance."

Another witness, Dave Sutcliffe, who had been in the Old Tree Inn pub a few doors down, added: "There was smoke everywhere and flames coming out of the kitchen at the back. I could see all the ceiling dripping down."

The amount of damage to the rear of the shop can be seen in the video, while the ladders and the duvet across the window ledge can be seen at the front.

Fire crews from Garforth, Castleford and Hunslet stations attended.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire was contained to the ground floor, however, a flat above has suffered some smoke damage.

They said four people were out of the property on arrival of the fire crews.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended and two males sustained minor injuries, one suffered a minor burn and the other suffering a minor cut. Both have attended hospital.

A fire investigation officer is attending to look into the cause of the fire.
