People from North Kirklees who call 999 or arrive in A&E needing urgent surgery will be taken straight to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust has decided to carry out a centralisation of all its unplanned operations at Pinderfields six months earlier than planned.

It is part of a shake-up will which also see Dewsbury’s A&E downgraded to an urgent care centre treating minor ailments.

All critically-ill and injured patients will be taken to Pinderfields from next April.

Pinderfields will also become the trust’s only consultant-led maternity department, treating all women with complex births from September.

Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals will both have midwife-led birth centres.

The decision to speed-up the emergency surgery move was taken by NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

A CCG report said colorectal and bariatric surgery would remain at Dewsbury until spring 2017. Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals will carry out more planned surgery.

The report said: “Day surgery will continue to be provided at all three hospitals and there will be rapid access to clinics, where appropriate, for patients who present at Dewsbury emergency department needing surgical assessment.”
