Miners’ strike: Orgreave justice campaigners to demonstrate in Wakefield today

A protest will be held in Wakefield today by campaigners who want an investigation into the actions of police at a mass picket during the 1984-5 miners’ strike.

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign will demonstrate outside the headquarters of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Woolpacks Yard, from 1pm.

Campaigners are frustrated at the length of time the IPCC is taking to decide if it can launch a full investigation into the actions of South Yorkshire Police at the Orgreave coking plant near Rotherham in June 1984.

Some 95 people were arrested at Orgreave, but subsequent court cases against them collapsed.

The matter was referred to the IPCC 17 months ago.

Orgreave campaigners want a full public inquiry.
