'˜Missed opportunity' for ex-pub landlady to be taken to hospital days before death

Wakefield Coroner’s Court heard mother-of-three Charlotte Dobson, 36, who used to run the Moorgate pub in Kippax, died from a ruptured duodenal ulcer on September 19 last year.

The inquest heard Miss Goodwood’s partner Jayson Lee had called 999 two days previously on September 17 asking for an ambulance as Miss Dobson was suffering from stomach pains.

The inquest was told he was advised him to take Miss Dobson, of Goodwood Avenue, Kippax, to hospital in his own car.

West Yorkshire Coroner David Hinchliff said: “Jayson was told the best course of action would be to take Charlotte to the emergency department in his own car and Jayson argued that they lived 10 miles away from the nearest hospital and he was looking after three children. The nurse stated that he could get a taxi and the NHS would pay for the taxi.”

The inquest was told Mr Lee took Miss Dobson to see a GP at Kippax Hall Surgery that afternoon where she was examined but no evidence of acute illness was discovered. Jayson Lee dialled 999 at 9.30pm on September 19 and said Miss Dobson had collapsed. She died that evening at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. A post mortem examination revealed Miss Dobson had died from a ruptured duodenal ulcer.

Recording a verdict of death from natural causes, Mr Hinchliff said the fact she did not go to hospital was ‘missed opportunity’.

Miss Goodwood’s mother Pam Allen, said: “She was well known in the village and very popular.”
