More than 50 pupils hurt in bus smash

A SCHOOL bus smash injured more than 50 pupils on Monday morning.

Two buses heading to Kettlethorpe High School and St Thomas a Becket High School were involved in a collision just after 8am Monday 31st January 2011 on Stoney Lane, Hall Green, close to the scene of a similar incident bus crash last February.

Nine children and one of the drivers were taken to Pinderfields Hospital.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “In total, twenty-three children between 12 and 15-years-old were checked over and treated by ambulance staff at the scene.

“Nine were taken to Pinderfields Hospital, six with neck pain, one with a shoulder injury and one with an ankle injury.”

Fourteen pupils were taken to Dewsbury District Hospital with cuts and bruises.

Another 30 children with very minor injuries were taken home by their parents.

Tudor Griffths, Kettlethorpe High School headteacher, said: “Most of the children involved in the incident on Monday returned to school the next day. We have provided counselling services for them and any other students who have been affected.”
