Ian Bitcon, area manager for fire safety at West Yorkshire Fire Service, said: “We are receiving a lot of weather-related calls and urge people to take precautions during today whilst winds are high.

“Please only make journeys where absolutely necessary and ensure your property, including wheelie bins and outdoor structures, are secure. Look after neighbours and the elderly to help keep everyone in the community safe.”

Northern Powergrid has activated its major incident response plan.

As of 11.45am (Thursday), approximately 25,000 properties across Yorkshire were without power due to the severe conditions.

In total, the storm has impacted around 55,000 customers since midnight.
