MP writes to council over '˜neglect' of countryside footpaths

Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett has claimed that parts of his constituency are losing footpaths through 'neglect'.

Mr Trickett has written to Wakefield Council leader Peter Box about the issue, suggesting that countryside walkers are unable to use some public highways because of overgrowth from farmland and the actions of landowners.

The Labour MP said that the concern was shared by many local people and asked for a guarantee that the local authority was tackling the problem.

In his letter to Coun Box, he wrote: “Many of these footpaths are ancient rights of way and I know that you share my view that access to the countryside is one of the great joys of our area.

“I am aware of the severe financial cuts that the council has suffered in recent years and I am wondering if you can let me know if you are seeking to ensure continuity of the local countryside, including footpath enforcement.

“How should local people address the issue when it becomes evident that a local footpath is being imperiled?”

Wakefield Council said that a response was likely to be sent to Mr Trickett’s letter next week.
