Mum gives gift of life to her daughter

The 34-year-old donated a kidney to her daughter, Holly, which saved her life.

Holly was born with a rare kidney condition called congenital nephrotic syndrome, which caused her kidneys to leak protein.

Tests revealed Mrs Wilson was a suitable donor and they went ahead with the kidney transplant at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) in May.

And after making a full recovery, four-year-old Holly was able to start the new term at Wheldon Infant School in Castleford yesterday.

Mrs Wilson, of Aketon Road, Castleford, said she did not think twice about donating her kidney ­– saying it is what any mother would do.

She said: “Holly was really excited and could not wait to be back with the friends again.

“The last few months have been really difficult but we are delighted it has had a positive outcome.”

Holly was diagnosed with the rare kidney condition only days after she was born.

And it meant she had to visit LGI up to seven times a week for check-ups.

Holly left nursery in March to have a bilateral nephrectomy – surgery to have both kidneys removed – the day after her fourth birthday.

Doctors then carried out the kidney transplant in May and Holly was kept in isolation for 12 weeks to recover.

Holly was eventually given the good news she could start the new school year with her friends.

Mrs Wilson, who runs the Beauty Box beauticians in Airedale, said: “Being in isolation was really difficult because Holly couldn’t do what she wanted to do.

“She couldn’t go to the park, the cinema and had to stay away from places where there was lots of people. She is now doing very well.”

Mrs Wilson thanked family, friends and customers for their support.
