Netherton man banned from driving after fatal crash in Dewsbury

Daniel Harbidge, 20, of Blacker Lane, was found guilty of causing the death of James Haigh by driving carelessly following a trial at Leeds Crown Court this week.

Yesterday (Thursday) he was given a 12 month community with 80 hours unpaid work and a £60 victim surcharge alongside the driving ban.

Mr Haigh had been riding his motorbike in Huddersfield Road on January 2, 2013, when he was hit by Harbidge’s car.

The 32-year-old welder was on his way to at Richard Alan Engineering in Shaw Cross.

An earlier hearing at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard Harbidge was at the junction of Temple Road when he turned into the path of the motorbike.

He was said to have suffered a “momentary lack of attention” in the moments leading to the crash at 6.40am.

Mr Haigh, who had been wearing a high visibility jacket, was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital where he died of his injuries.
