A YORKSHIRE-themed market has been launched to boost trade at Wakefield’s Ridings Shopping Centre.
The market, which sells locally-grown produce and gifts, will be held on the first Sunday of every month in a bid to overcome a downturn in High Street sales.
The market was trialled in the run-up to Christmas and has now been made permanent.
The Ridings said it had already seen a nine per cent increase in footfall compared with non-market Sundays and there was growing interest from retailers in the new idea.
Permanent retailers at the centre also reported increased sales on market days.
Ridings Centre manager Barbara Winston said: “Now more than ever we need to adopt innovative approaches to attracting shoppers. For the Ridings the Yorkshire market has been a great success, a real winner for both independent retailers and our existing stores.”
