Retailers Primark and Marks & Spencer will open stores at the £135m Five Towns Park, which developers say could create 2,000 jobs.

Lateral Property Group was granted planning permission to develop land next to junction 32 of the M62, close to the Xscape leisure complex in Glass Houghton last year.

The plans include a new 10,000 capacity stadium for the Castleford Tigers, as well as a 50-acre country park, shops and restaurants.

Primark and M&S will open stores alongside Next, who became the development’s first anchor tenant.

Construction work is expected to start on the Five Towns Park in the autumn.

Philip Lunn, of Lateral Property Group, said: “It is fantastic news that we have now secured two more anchor retailers for Five Towns Park.

“Primark and M&S are two of the most successful names in UK retail and their commitment to Five Towns Park is a major endorsement.

“We expect to begin initial site enabling works in the coming months.”

As part of the plans, M&S will close its store on Carlton Street, Castleford, and relocate to the new development when it has been built.

The retailer said staff currently working at the store would be able to transfer to the new site.

Helen Nash, head of UK property at M&S, said: “This development gives us an opportunity to significantly improve our retail offer in the area. Our store will provide customers with greater choice in the extensive clothing and homeware that we offer.

“We are delighted to have signed the agreement and look forward to progressing our detailed store designs.”
