A DISUSED church was burned down in an arson attack, a jury was told.

Cardboard or blankets were set alight at St Faith’s in Pinderfields Park on June 18. The blaze took hold in the roof space, leaving it in danger of collapsing.

Suspects Michael John Lill, 23, of Arundel Close, Wakefield, and Jason Sulley, 23, of Hornbeam Avenue, Silcoates Park, were arrested nearby.

Both deny arson. But Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday (Tuesday) how the old school friends, who accepted being inside the church, now blamed each other for starting the blaze.

The trial was told the church, on the corner of Eastmoor Road and Aberford Road, was bought for £285,000 in 2007 and developers planned to turn it into flats.

But the fire cause extensive structural damage and the remains will have to be pulled down.

The trial continues.
