AN Olympic swimmer will open the city’s new £10m leisure centre tomorrow.

Joe Roebuck, who was part of a 44-swimmer squad for Great Britain at this summer’s Olympics in London, will visit Sun Lane Leisure with members of Wakefield Swim Club before the centre opens to the public at 11am.

He will cut the ribbon on the new facility with Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for sport David Dagger.

Council leader, Coun Peter Box, said: “Sun Lane Leisure is opening in the most inspirational year of sport the country has ever seen.

“We are committed to investing in the economy and the building of the new centre has not only provided jobs for local people but will also provide a state of the art sports facility for the people of Wakefield.”

Sun Lane Leisure has a 25 metre six-lane pool, a learner pool, a fitness suite, activity rooms, meeting rooms, a spectator viewing area and a café.

Work on the new site began last summer. The old Sun Lane Baths had to close in 2006 when they were found to be in danger of collapsing.
