Time to cast a clout as June is here

It’s hard to believe that in just a few more days it will be June and we will all be able to “cast a clout”, writes Karen Wright.

We all probably use that phrase but what does it mean? Apparently, a clout is a word used in the 18th century for a piece of clothing, so it means that the weather is still unpredictable until June! Well its very hot and sunny now and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

It was Bank Holiday Sunday recently and the Covid19 volunteers’ group that I am involved with put together a BBQ special for the delivery that day. It was a great success and took lots of effort and energy for us all to pull it together. Every person involved went the extra mile. My part was to assemble 100 mini Pavlovas for the dessert. The strawberries and raspberries had been very kindly gifted to our cause by the new owner of the Mini Mart on Painthorpe Lane in Hall Green.

A Pavlova is Meringue, usually topped with cream and fruit. I used shop bought meringue nests, I then filled them with a thick custard and topped with strawberries and raspberries and a scattering of sprinkles. The dessert is named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. I guess it is because her white tutu resembles a fluffy meringue. Pavlova is such a show stopping pudding, but it is so simple to put together.

This week is National Volunteers week. Starting on June 1 there were hundreds of events planned all over the country to celebrate the work that volunteers do across all sectors of our communities. Due to the Covid19 pandemic, events have had to be cancelled. However, Wakefield Hospice decided that they still wanted to do something to recognise the hundreds of volunteers that work for and raise money to keep the Hospice going.

In addition to this it is the 30th anniversary of the Hospice and they wanted to mark that too. After much thought they have decided to hold a Zoom tea party on Saturday June 6 at 3pm, tea at three. I will be hosting.

I have also recorded a video on behalf of the Hospice.

It is an appeal really asking for financial donations. It is a hard time to be asking everyone to give, as this pandemic has impacted on so many people both financially and emotionally.

The thing is the Hospice has lost almost all its income because of the lockdown and it is dire need of funds. If you can donate even a small amount, please do!

Next week for me it will be about cooking and eating outside. We only have a tiny garden, but it is looking lovely.

We even bought a half barrel and a fountain and now we are the proud owners of three tiny goldfish. There is something so soothing about the sound of running water in the garden, well providing its not rainwater!!

I am soon to be the very lucky recipient of a cast iron garden stove, idea being it warms you up if it drops a bit chilly and you cook your dinner at the same time. The stove is manufactured by Esse and delivered to me by Bower and Child of Huddersfield. Now my mind is churning with BBQ plans, lamb and feta burger anyone?

So, everyone, please stay safe and mindful and keep within the guidelines. We are getting there. Let’s stay strong.
